More info

Long Clawson asked us to focus on reducing energy consumption and associated costs, improving on site resilience (i.e. less reliance on the grid), and reducing the overall carbon footprint of the product. Maintaining full operation of the plant at all times was a key requirement.

The solution was derived with three key energy related assets;

  1. A combined heat and power plant, generating electricity and heat for utilisation in the cheese making process. A new, complex low temperature hot water infrastructure formed part of the solution.
  2. Roof mounted solar PV system to provide sustainable power to the site.
  3. High temperature heat pump to utilise waste heat from the existing refrigeration together with 150m3 of buffer vessel storage to balance the heat utilisation and allow utilisation of the plant within the demand side response (DSR) market.

All the above assets have been integrated via a new controls system to ensure optimum performance of the new system.

The project is currently under construction and will be completed in Q1 2023.

A key element of the project involved applying for grant funding via the Industrial Energy Transformation Fund (IETF). Only 48% of projects that applied were successful in this particular phase of funding, and we were able to secure a grant of £854,000 for the qualifying parts of the project. We have also written a highly detailed measurement and verification plan that allows the customer to demonstrate the benefits of the project over the next 5 years.

During the process from development of the scheme through to implementation Evonic have been excellent with their approach, including building a financial case to support third party tendering and sourcing different funding options. They have enabled the project to go from concept through to a fully functional installation. Their expertise, professionalism and support throughout the process has been exceptional.
